Himachal Pradesh Congress Takes Decisive Action Against Cross-Voting MLA Amidst Political Turmoil

The Himachal Pradesh Congress made waves on March 6th as it cracked down on party MLA Sudhir Sharma for his controversial act of cross-voting in support of the BJP candidate during the state's recent Rajya Sabha polls on February 27th. In a swift and resolute move, Congress General Secretary KC Venugopal, through an official statement, revealed that party president Mallikarjun Kharge had promptly relieved Sharma of his position as secretary within the party ranks.

Sharma, a prominent figure hailing from Dharamshala and a former minister in Himachal Pradesh, found himself in hot water as he faced the looming threat of disqualification as an MLA for blatantly defying a party whip. This bold action underscores the Congress party's unwavering commitment to maintaining discipline and upholding party loyalty among its members.

The repercussions of Sharma's actions reverberated further as six other Congress MLAs were also disqualified earlier on March 5th for their involvement in similar acts of cross-voting. These MLAs, who brazenly supported BJP nominee Harsh Mahajan during the Rajya Sabha polls and later abstained from voting on the Budget, found themselves at odds with the party's directives, resulting in severe consequences.

Among the disqualified MLAs are notable figures such as Rajinder Rana, Inder Dutt Lakhanpal, Devinder Kumar Bhutoo, Ravi Thakur, and Chetanya Sharma, in addition to Sudhir Sharma himself. The disqualification not only diminished the effective strength of the House but also dealt a significant blow to the Congress party's representation, shrinking their numbers from 40 to 34 in the legislative assembly.
